William Lee McNutt III, affectionately known as Lee William “Bill” McNutt III, was a prominent figure in the state of Texas and a significant contributor to the development of Southern Methodist University (SMU). As a distinguished lawyer, politician, and academician, McNutt left behind a legacy that is still revered today.

McNutt was born in Wichita Falls, Texas, in 1925, and went on to study at SMU, where he received his Bachelor's degree in 1949. After graduation, he pursued a law degree from the University of Texas at Austin and began practicing law in Dallas.

In addition to his legal career, McNutt was actively involved in Texas politics. He served as the Chairman of the Texas Democratic Party from 1952 to 1956, and later as a member of the Texas House of Representatives. He also played a significant role in the establishment of the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and the Dallas Arboretum.

McNutt's contributions to SMU were also noteworthy. He served on the Board of Trustees for over 30 years and played a crucial role in the development of the university. In recognition of his service, the university named the William Lee McNutt III Plaza in his honor.
