The external characteristics of the chorion of the eggs from four species of Austrolebias (A. alexandri, A. bellottii, A. nigripinnis and A. viarius) and two species of Sympsonichthys (S. bokermanni and S. notatus) were studied, All species presented similar chorionic characteristics with the exception of S. bokermanni which did not present the hair-like projections nor the folded surface found in the rest. S. bokermanni presented a smooth surface with rounded structures and less abundant ring structures. These characteristics are similar to those found previously in Nematolebias myersi. The remaining species presented differences among each other in density, thickness and length of the hair-like projections as well as in the chorionic surface. The chorionic characteristics of the eggs of Cynolebiatinae can be used as a specific diagnostic character and in some cases could be useful in phylogenetic analyses.
