Millions of people reside in urban and periurban ecosystems, exerting high pressure on natural
resources, affecting their sustainability. The United Nations Organization promotes, in the
Sustainable Development Goals, the conservation of Ecosystem Services (ES) by social actors.
The level of ES recognition is relevant to maintain sustainability in these ecosystems. The
objective of this work was to analyse the level of recognition of ES provided by urban and
periurban ecosystems by different social actors. For this, a study was carried out based on a
global bibliographic review. Social actors (local residents, experts, decision makers) recognized
that urban and periurban ecosystems are providers of a wide range of ES (provision, regulation
and cultural). This work constitutes a conceptual base to approach, in a holistic way, the
society-nature relations.

CUADERNO URBANO sustains its commitment to the Open Access policies for scientific information, on account of the fact that both scientific publications and public funded research must circulate freely on the Internet and without restrictions.
CUADERNO URBANO ratifies the Open Access model in which the contents of scientific publications are available in full text free of charge on the Internet, without temporary embargoes, and whose editorial production costs are not transferred to the authors. This policy proposes breaking down the economic barriers that generate inequities both in access to information and in the publication of research results.
