Abstract

This paper presents the extensionist actions carried out in the field of promotion and awareness of a balanced and varied diet, with emphasis on adequate iron intake, for the adolescent population of different secondary schools in the city of Corrientes. The selection of this nutrient is due to the fact that iron is a mineral that develops numerous vital functions and an imbalance of this nutrient, either by deficit or overload, can affect several organs. In this context, the extension activities consisted of diffusion seminars that allowed interaction between university students and the different members of the educational community, mainly middle school students, to whom it was directly addressed. In addition, during the seminars, the experimental determination of iron content in food was carried out with the help of a mobile phone application. This allowed high school students to use their mobile phones, an instrument that enhances their communicative and creative functions for the realization of experiences in the field of chemical sciences. Finally, the activities carried out promoted the importance of good eating habits through relevant and updated information, aiming to improve the intake of essential nutrients in general.
