Austral-american species of the genus <i>Cienfuegosia</i> Cav. (Malvaceae-Gossypieae)

Abstract

In this taxonomic treatment of the genus 15 species are recognized in the area, which includes Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay and the states of Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso de Sul, Sao Paulo and Río Grande do Sul. Two subgenera are present, Cienfuegosia with 14 species and Novoarticulata with only one species. C. conciliata from West Paraguay. AII the sections of the sugenus Cienfuegosia, except the section Spathulata from Ecuador, are present in Paraguay : section Cienfuegosia with C. subternata, section Robusta, with C. affinis and C. lanceolata , section Paraguayana, with C. Orummondii, C. sulfurea , C. integrifolia and C. subprostrata, and the section Friesia , with C. argentina, C. hispida, C. Hasslerana and C. ulmifolia , plus C. Saraviae and C. Schulzii from northern Argentina, and C. angustifolia from Bolivia . The subgenus Novoarticu/ata, the species C. conciliata, C. angustifolia, C. Saraviae and C. Schulzii, are described as new, and the new combination C. lanceolata is proposed.
