Lifting solutions and their potential application in mucosal resection and endoscopic submucosal dissection in pigs

Techniques such as endoscopic mucosal resection and endoscopic submucosal dissection, are minimally invasive therapeutic techniques widely spread in human medicine, but unknown in veterinary medicine. This preliminary study compared 4 gastric submucosal injection solutions: hyaluronic acid, 10% glycerol, 6% starch and 0.9% physiological saline. By injecting 5 ml of each solution into ex vivo stomachs of pigs and subsequently assessing the elevation profile of each substance and comparing groups by means of the Student’s t-test with p<0.05. The initial diameter of the mucosal elevation showed no differences between groups and was around 4 cm. The maximum height was obtained by hyaluronic acid (10.3 mm). Finally, hyaluronic acid showed a longer permanence time (68 minutes). These preliminary results are promising because they allow the first approach of veterinary doctors to these techniques.Downloads
