Factors affecting growth and body condition of goats livestock in the semi-arid region of Formosa

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of kidding season, birth type, and sex on maternal body condition under a traditional extensive system in semi-arid Formosa. Birth weight (BW) and daily weight gain (DWG) in kids up to 40 days of age were assessed. Body condition score (BCS) was measured in dams at kidding and 30 ± 5 days post-kidding. A factorial design was carried on with 3 factors (sex, birth type, and kidding season), with two levels each (male-female, single-twin, and autumn-spring) along with their interactions. BCS and BW were analyzed using ANOVA (p<0.05), while DWG was assessed through linear regression and MLM (p<0.05). No significant differences were observed in BCS of goats at kidding; however, differences emerged at 30 ± 5 days post-kidding, with higher values in autumn (1.9 BCS) compared to spring (1.5 BCS). Males BW (2.94 kg) were higher than females BW (2.66 kg), and single kiddings (3.22 kg) were higher than double kiddings (2.39 kg). No significant differences in DWG were observed between males (0.11 kg day-1) and females (0.11 kg day-1). However, DWG was significantly higher in kids born from single births (0.13 kg day-1), than those born from double births (0.09 kg day-1). Additionally, kids born in autumn showed a significantly higher DWG (0.13 kg day-1) than those born in spring (0.09 kg day-1). Season influenced the BCS of dams at 30 ± 5 days post kidding. Sex and birth type affected BW, while birth type and kidding season influenced DWG.
