The evolution of firefighting operations from the first Roman brigades to the creation of fire brigades is presented, discussing the evolution of water suppying resources up to the invention of fire hyrants, and how the availability of a permanent water supply gives meaning to the operation of fire engines, pumpers and other modern firefighting equipment. The NFPA regulations and the cases of European cities are briefly analyzed. In contrast, the case of the city of Rosario is presented and how the resulting precariousness in water supply makes firefighting dependent on tank trucks doubling the firefighting effort
