Abstract

The BENO panels constitute a precast construction system designed for social housing. It consists of
fired clay bricks with a specific size, named “bovedilla”, linked with concrete and reinforced by an iron
framework. The standard panels contain 24 “bovedillas” and measures 0.43*2.27m, being
complicated to obtain the “bovedillas” suppliers. Generally, they are used in a wall built with two
panels joined at their back. The aim of the research work was to find alternative “bovedillas” that can
be manufactured using wastes and low energy incorporated materials. Three types of masonry units
made from different materials were studied: earth, PET, and WEEE plastic bound with Portland
cement. BENO walls using different panels were built, and the compressive strength was measured
after 28 days. All alternatives showed values grather than 0,4 MPa, and met the requirements of the
CIRSOC501E standard, making them suitable for the BENO system.
