The Angry Young Man is a prominent trope in post-World War II British theatre. Its impact was primarily attributed to realist plays, but it also influenced other theatrical traditions. Here, we examine the presence of this theme in the theatre of playwright Peter Shaffer and his latest play. We argue that Shaffer dismantles the figure of the Angry Young Man in The Gift of the Gorgon, an operation that confronts him with a theatrical tradition but also allows him to revisit certain elements of his own work.
