Early Response of Herpetofauna to Large-Scale Wildfires in San Cayetano Provincial Park, Corrientes, Argentina

Abstract

Wildfires constitute ecological disturbances that modify habitat structure and microenvironmental conditions, particularly affecting herpetofauna due to their dependence on specific microhabitats and limited dispersal capacity. This study describes the patterns of amphibian and reptile records during the months following a severe wildfire that occurred in March 2025 in San Cayetano Provincial Park (Corrientes, Argentina). Sampling was conducted between March and October using pitfall traps, artificial shelters, visual transects, and opportunistic records across three environments: grassland, forest, and wetland. 105 observations corresponding to 24 species were recorded. The wetland showed the highest frequency of records, followed by the grassland and forest. Higher numbers of records were observed during the first months after the fire, with an increase in wetland records toward October, coinciding with increased precipitation. Exploratory ordination (NMDS) and similarity analyses (PERMANOVA) showed broad overlap in species composition among environments, with no clear patterns of differentiation detected. The results indicate differences in recording patterns among environments during the post-fire period. However, these findings should be interpreted with caution due to methodological limitations, including the absence of control sites, pseudoreplication, and potential detectability biases. This study provides a baseline for future research and biodiversity monitoring in the region.
