The “Super-Mother” and the “self-correction” in The Best Mother in the World (2019) by Nuria Labari

Motherhood is a central theme in contemporary Ibero-American literature, where numerous female authors question the historical imposition of the maternal role on women. Within this framework, Nuria Labari, in The best mother in the world (2019), exposes the tension women experience as they attempt to reconcile motherhood with the demands of work. This issue relates to the concept of the “super-mother” proposed by Lina Meruane (2014), which denounces a feminine model that requires the seamless compatibility of motherhood and professional productivity. Drawing on Michel Foucault’s notion of “self-correction”, this study analyzes this figure in Labari’s novel in order to show how the narrative reflects an internalized social mandate that manifests as guilt. The study concludes that, in the novel, the “super-mother” embodies a critique of the patriarchal and capitalist system that imposes an unattainable ideal of female fulfillment, thus revealing the symbolic violence embedded in the construction of motherhood.
