Male pseudohermaphroditism in dogs: a report of two clinical cases

Two cases of disorders of sex development (DSD) in dogs are described, characterized by discordances between chromosomal, gonadal, and phenotypic sex. In both patients, physical examination revealed abnormalities of the external genitalia, which prompted further diagnostic evaluation, including abdominal ultrasound, exploratory laparotomy, and histopathological, cytogenetic, and molecular analyses. In Case 1, a large tubular structure was identified in the abdominal cavity, along with testicular tissue showing proliferation of germ and Sertoli cells, and structures consistent with hydrometra. Cytogenetic analysis revealed a 78, XY karyotype. In Case 2, a tubular structure compatible with the female reproductive tract was observed, along with gonads displaying testicular characteristics. Cytogenetic analysis revealed a 78, XX karyotype, and molecular analysis confirmed the absence of the SRY gene. Findings from both cases illustrate different presentations within the spectrum of DSD in dogs and highlight the usefulness of a comprehensive diagnostic approach for accurate characterization.
