Abstract

We intend to investigate the linguistic landscape (LL) that occupied the streets on April 23rd, 2024, during the first National Protest for Public Universities. Its massive scale resulted in an abundance of signage directed toward a common goal, offering an excellent opportunity for an in-depth study of how messages are displayed within this type of context. This study is framed within Seals’ (2011) concept of the ever-shifting landscape, which transforms during the displacement of those participating in a protest.

Drawing on more than one hundred photographs that circulated on social media, we aim to establish categories for the classification of the signs displayed based on their linguistic content. While the LL of a mobilization is ephemeral, transitory, and mobile, it becomes fixed through the replication (Martín Rojo, 2014) of these signs in digital media.
